History

This is the Hebrew Rest Cemetery, the burial ground of Orange's once-thriving Jewish community. A Ladies Aid and Cemetery Association organized in 1904 and by 1907 had purchased land for a Jewish cemetery so that members could be buried according to traditional custom; a congregation, Beth El, followed in 1909. The community peaked around the World War I shipbuilding boom before declining, and the cemetery survives as its most tangible remnant.
