History

The centerpiece of this Palo Pinto complex is a two-story sandstone jail built in 1880 that served the county until 1941, when the jail moved to the new courthouse; the Palo Pinto Historical Association restored the building as a museum in 1968. The surrounding grounds hold several relocated pioneer log cabins, including a dogtrot cabin moved from the J.R.C. Moseley Ranch in 1972 and the Barrows-Edgin cabin relocated from Mineral Wells in 2007. A rock fence partly enclosing the complex was built by the Works Progress Administration between 1935 and 1937.
