History

Mount Zion (Mt. Zion) Cemetery near DeBerry began on land owned by pioneer settlers Richard and Polly Golden, who gave the tract to their daughter Elizabeth and her husband Cornelius Crenshaw; the Crenshaws buried a son here in the 1840s. In 1850 the property was deeded to trustees of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church and Cemetery, and additional land that had passed to the local farmers' Grange was added after that group disbanded in 1875. Its earliest legible marker dates to 1855, and the still-active burial ground holds many early Panola County leaders and military veterans. A Texas Historical Commission marker was placed in 1981.
