History
The Canon Ranch Railroad Eclipse Windmill was erected in 1898 near Sheffield in Pecos County by rancher William Canon, who chose a twenty-two-and-a-half-foot-diameter Railroad Eclipse model, the largest windmill the Eclipse Company ever built, with a wheel of 232 wooden blades. Long the largest functional turbine-wheel windmill still standing on its original site, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and restored in 2001. In 2019 it was moved to the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock for further restoration and permanent display.
