History
Oates Cemetery began as a family burial ground on the Caraway Oates homestead in the Shady Grove area near Leggett, where seven generations of the Oates family are interred. The earliest known burial, in 1854, was that of an enslaved person who died during the family's covered-wagon journey from Henry County, Alabama. Now the resting place of many Leggett-area residents and veterans of several wars, the cemetery received a Texas Historical Marker in 2009.
