History

Fort Leaton, the largest adobe structure in Texas with about 40 rooms, is believed to have begun as an 1830s adobe residence built by Juan Bustillos. Benjamin Leaton purchased it in 1848 and converted it into a fortified trading post, and when Presidio County was organized in 1850 it served as the first county seat. The Burgess family occupied it until abandoning it in 1926; the state acquired it in 1967 and opened it to the public in 1978 under the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
