History
St. Mary's Catholic Church in Umbarger, built in 1929 and dedicated in 1930, is renowned for its interior murals and wood carvings created in late 1945 by Italian prisoners of war from the nearby Camp Hereford. Artists including Carlo Sanvito and Enrico Zorzi painted scenes such as the Assumption and Annunciation and carved a relief of the Last Supper, making the church one of the most extensive examples of POW art in the United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
