History

The Old Reagan County Courthouse in the ghost town of Stiles was built in 1911, after Reagan County was carved from Tom Green County in 1903 and the settlement of Stiles became the county seat. The two-story rusticated native-limestone building, part of a complex that included a stone jail and vault, had round-arched entry vestibules and a symmetrical plan. The county seat moved to Big Lake in 1925, the building was last occupied in the early 1950s, and a 1999 fire left only its stone shell; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
