History

Captain Amon B. King led a company of Texas volunteers to Refugio in March 1836 to help evacuate families during the Texas Revolution. After fighting at Nuestra Senora del Refugio Mission, he and his men were captured by General Urrea's forces and executed on March 16, 1836, part of the campaign that culminated in the Goliad Massacre. The State of Texas erected a memorial to King and his men in Refugio for the 1936 Centennial.
