History

Mumford Cemetery serves the Brazos-bottom community of Mumford, named for Jesse Mumford, an early settler who was licensed in 1855 to run a ferry on the Brazos near the site of old Fort Tenoxtitlan. A post office opened in 1878, and by 1890 the town had a cotton gin, lumberyard, brick kiln, syrup mill, broom factory, church, and school, with a railroad reaching it in 1891. The cemetery remains the community's principal burial ground.
