History
The London Museum in New London preserves the memory of the New London School explosion of March 18, 1937, in which a natural gas leak ignited and destroyed the school, killing nearly 300 students and teachers, the deadliest school disaster in U.S. history. Opened in 1998 across from the explosion site, the museum displays photographs, newspaper clippings, telegrams of condolence, survivor accounts, and artifacts recovered from the wreckage. The tragedy led Texas to become the first state to require that an odorant be added to natural gas, a safety practice now standard nationwide.
