History
The Oliphant House, better known as the Gaines-Oliphint House, stands on State Highway 21 about seven miles east of Milam in Sabine County and is one of the oldest surviving log residences in Texas. It was built by James Gaines on land he acquired in 1830, a one-and-a-half-story double-pen structure with upstairs and downstairs dogtrots, framed in longleaf pine on cypress beams. Gaines sold it in 1843 to Martha Oliphint, whose daughter Fanny left still-legible chalk notations in the upstairs dogtrot; the house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
