History

Built in 1903 at a cost of $8,800, the Sabine County Jail held prisoners until 1982 and was one of only two Texas jails equipped with an interior hanging rope and trapdoor. Two hangings took place there, a public one held outside in 1909 and the only use of the interior gallows in 1922, two years before Texas outlawed county hangings. Under the Sabine County Historical Commission since 1987, it now houses history exhibits and the Vergie Speights Memorial Library.
