History

Sabine County, one of the original counties of the Republic of Texas, was established December 14, 1837 and named for the Sabine River that forms the Texas-Louisiana line. Milam served as the first county seat, but voters moved it to Hemphill in 1858, honoring jurist and senator John Hemphill. The marker at Hemphill, placed in 2010, notes the county's role as an entry point for Anglo-American settlers after the Texas Revolution.
