History
McRae Church began on October 15, 1882 as Union (or Wilson) Church at a site about six miles southwest of San Augustine, its first name honoring Rev. Hugh Wilson, organizer of the first Presbyterian church in Texas. It was soon renamed for Rev. D. A. McRae of North Carolina, who helped organize the congregation and served as its first pastor. Captain T. W. Blount deeded land for the church and cemetery in 1884, and the frame sanctuary was dedicated that October; though the congregation dissolved in 1969, the white wooden church and its cemetery remain.
