History

Although long known as the home of Colonel Philip A. Sublett, the present two-story house in San Augustine was actually built by his son in 1874 and is notable for the Ionic detailing of its portico. Philip Sublett was a close friend and business partner of Sam Houston, who is said to have recuperated at the Sublett place after being wounded at the Battle of San Jacinto. The house was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS TX-241) in 1936 and long remained in the family.
