Marker Inscription

Designed in the Classical Revival style. The three-story building has a cross-axis plan, symmetrical design, rectangular form. Exterior walls are faced with brick fired in nearby kilns during courthouse construction. Classically inspired elements of the building include columns, quoining, pediments, large entry stairs, and symmetrical arrangement. Doric columns and pediments added after 1937 replaced earlier Corinthian columns and capitals, but stay within the Classical Revival style.

History

The San Jacinto County Courthouse in Coldspring is a three-story Classical Revival building designed by Houston architects Roy E. Lane and Wilkes A. Dowdy and built in 1916-1917 after a 1915 fire destroyed the previous courthouse. Its exterior walls are faced with brick fired in nearby kilns during construction, and it displays columns, quoining, pediments, and a symmetrical plan. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2000 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
