History
Schleicher County's first jail was built of local limestone in 1906 in the Second Empire style and included gallows that were never used; sheriffs and their families lived in the building, one for 24 years. The 1962 marker stands on the courthouse grounds near the present county courthouse, a Classical Revival building designed by Henry T. Phelps and completed in 1924.
