History
The Western Trail, also called the Great Western or Dodge City Trail, was blazed in 1874 and carried millions of Texas longhorns north to railheads and ranges in Kansas, Nebraska and beyond. Branches of the trail fanned out through the Albany area of Shackelford County before reuniting and crossing the Clear Fork of the Brazos near Fort Griffin. Cattle moved over the route until the last major drive in 1893.
