History

The Shelby County Courthouse in Center was designed by Irish-born architect J. J. E. Gibson and completed in 1885 for about $26,000. Gibson wanted the building to resemble the castles of his native Ireland, giving it turrets, towers and a frame cupola in a Romanesque Revival design that is now considered the only Irish-castle-style courthouse in the United States. A National Register property, it still hosts county offices and is open for tours while most county business has moved to a newer courthouse.
