History
King-Oates Cemetery, also recorded as the Oates Cemetery, lies in the Joaquin area of Shelby County. The surrounding land was originally part of a 315-and-one-half-acre patent granted to James Seavy Oates in July 1861 by Edward Clark, then governor of Texas. The rural family burial ground reflects the mid-19th-century settlement of eastern Shelby County.
