History

Harris Creek Cemetery near Winona traces to Harris Creek Baptist Church, organized in October 1849 with fifteen charter members under pastor William H. Ray. The congregation, whose Anglo members and enslaved African Americans worshiped in one building, moved to the Mount Carmel community in 1852 after flooding, and a cemetery began on adjacent land. Winona Baptist Church deeded the burial ground to the Harris Creek Memorial Association in 1948; its markers record veterans of conflicts from the War of 1812 through Vietnam. An Official Texas Historical Marker was placed in 2010.
