History

St. Louis (New) Cemetery is one of two burial grounds of the historic St. Louis community, a predominantly African American settlement southeast of Tyler in Smith County that stretched along Walton and Noonday roads. By 1966 the community included the St. Louis School, two cemeteries, a church, and a substantial residential district before the area was gradually absorbed into Tyler. The cemetery is documented among Smith County's historic African American burial grounds.
