UT Tyler opened in 1971 as Tyler State College. It became Texas Eastern University in 1975 and joined the UT System in 1979. For its first decades it took only upper-level students, and it did not admit freshmen until 1998. The wooded campus on Tyler's east side is laid out around a lake. The Texas Legislature created Tyler State College in 1971 as an upper-level school, meaning it offered only junior, senior and graduate courses; its first classes met in January 1973 in the vacant O. M. Roberts Junior High School. In 1975 the college was renamed Texas Eastern University and moved to a permanent, wooded campus of about 200 acres in southeast Tyler, laid out around a lake. Governor Bill Clements signed the 1979 bill that brought it into the University of Texas System as the University of Texas at Tyler, and enrollment roughly doubled during the 1980s. For almost two decades it remained an upper-division campus whose undergraduates all transferred in; a 1997 state law cleared the way for freshmen and sophomores, and UT Tyler began admitting them in 1998. Its colleges grew to include business, engineering, nursing, education and the liberal arts and sciences. In 2021 UT Tyler absorbed the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler into a single institution, and the UT System announced plans for a medical school under the merged university, the first in East Texas. Its athletic teams, the Patriots, completed a move from NCAA Division III to Division II in 2021 and compete in the Lone Star Conference.
