History

This marker records the vicinity of Mission Mier a Visita, a mission outpost (visita) established about 1750 near present Roma as part of Jose de Escandon's colonization of the lower Rio Grande. A visita was a country chapel visited periodically by priests to say Mass and administer sacraments, serving settlers who had crossed the river from the town of Mier.
