History

La Puerta-Dreamland Cemetery lies in southeastern Starr County near the former communities of La Puerta and Dreamland, a few miles east of Rio Grande City. La Puerta, Spanish for "the door," began as the headquarters of the La Puerta ranch, while neighboring Dreamland grew from an irrigated-farm project of the late 1920s that had its own post office by 1944. As the small farming settlements faded and were absorbed into one another, the cemetery remained to serve area families.
