History
Fort Davis Family Fort in Stephens County was a "citizens' fort" established on October 20, 1864, when frontier families gathered for mutual protection following the deadly Elm Creek Raid by Comanches that month. About one hundred local residents lived together at the stronghold during the Civil War, and a school was set up there; settlers Sam and Susan Newcomb famously kept diaries of the time they and other families "forted up." The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 28, 1992.
