History
The American Airlines C. R. Smith Museum opened on July 3, 1993 on the campus of the American Airlines Flight Academy at the south end of DFW Airport. It is dedicated to the history of American Airlines and commercial aviation, with roughly 25,000 square feet of exhibit galleries and a 10,000-square-foot hangar housing the Flagship Knoxville, a fully restored 1940 Douglas DC-3. The museum is named for Cyrus Rowlett Smith, an aviation pioneer and longtime president of American Airlines whose vision helped launch the DC-3.
