History

Old Trinity Cemetery, on the north edge of Fort Worth's Oakwood Cemetery, historically served the city's African American community. The land grew from a burial ground begun in 1879, when Fort Worth pioneer John Peter Smith donated acreage following the death of his stepson, and it expanded into the larger Oakwood complex. Among those buried at Old Trinity is businessman and political figure William Madison 'Gooseneck' McDonald. The area is part of the Oakwood Cemetery Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.
