The Pentecostal Church of God voted in 1983 to fold its two schools, Southern Bible College in Houston and Evangelical Christian College in Fresno, California, into one national college, and Messenger College opened in September 1987 on a wooded tract across from the denomination's headquarters in Joplin, Missouri. For the next quarter-century it prepared ministers, missionaries and other church workers, and after a massive tornado struck Joplin in 2011 the college and the church took in displaced residents and served as a relief hub. Messenger relocated to Euless, Texas, in 2012 and in 2018 moved to Bedford, where it now sits alongside the Pentecostal Church of God's International Missions Center. Accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools, it offers certificates, associate and bachelor's degrees in Christian ministry and Christian counseling, including online.
