History

Cortznes Cemetery is the principal African American burial ground for Mount Pleasant, on the city's old west side, and is also known as the Old West Side Cemetery. It is actually a cluster of at least five adjoining cemeteries—Cortznes, Sheppard, Searcy, the Old West City Cemetery, and the Mount Pleasant Colored Cemetery—that together document the history of the city's Black community.
