History

Gladewater Cemetery, about seven miles north of Mount Pleasant on FM 1402, began on land that L. Mark and Annie E. Crooks donated to the Spring Hill Baptist Church, and it was originally called Spring Hill Cemetery. The first burial was that of Ella Crooks on July 10, 1887, and by sometime before 1904 both the church and cemetery had been renamed Gladewater. The chain-link-fenced grounds beside the Gladewater Missionary Baptist Church now hold roughly 1,000 graves.
