History
The George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center opened on October 24, 1980, as the first African-American neighborhood museum in Texas, housed in a 1926 wood-frame building that had served as Austin's first public library and later its first African-American branch library, renamed for scientist George Washington Carver in 1947. A 1998 city bond funded a major expansion, and the resulting 36,000-square-foot complex was completed in 2005 with galleries, a theater, classrooms, and a dance studio. The museum preserves and exhibits African American material culture, history, and artistic expression.
