History

Pioneer Farms (formerly the Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farm) is a living-history museum on land first claimed in 1844 by Texas Ranger Lt. James O. Rice; Frederick and Harriet Jourdan settled there in 1852 and built a farm of roughly 2,000 acres. Beginning in 1974 the Austin Natural Science Association and the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department developed the 19th-century farm and museum. Spanning about 90 wooded acres, it re-creates seven themed historic areas, from an 1844 Tonkawa encampment to farmsteads dated 1868 through 1899.
