History
The Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry traces the history of Texas's militia and volunteer forces from the first militia muster in Stephen F. Austin's colony in 1823 through the modern Texas Army and Air National Guard and Texas State Guard. The effort began in 1986, and in 1990 the museum was assigned Camp Mabry's Building 6, a 1918 World War I-era mess hall, opening to the public on November 14, 1992. The 45,000-square-foot museum displays tanks, aircraft, and artillery along with more than 30,000 artifacts, and admission is free.
