History

The official residence of the governor of Texas was built between 1854 and 1856 by Austin master builder Abner Cook in the Greek Revival style, its six 29-foot Ionic columns fronting the porch and its bricks molded from Cook's own clay pit on the Colorado River. Governor Elisha M. Pease first occupied the mansion in June 1856, and it is the oldest governor's mansion west of the Mississippi and the fourth-oldest continuously occupied one in the nation. Badly damaged by an arson fire in 2008, it was restored and reoccupied by 2012.
