History

Santa Maria Cemetery in Pflugerville was founded in 1924 by Mexican families who had come to Central Texas during the upheaval of the Mexican Revolution and found work on the region's farmlands. On March 13, 1924, they purchased one acre from LaRue Noton for $100, and because burial insurance was not available to them they organized a local mutual-aid chapter, the Sociedad Funeraria de Agricultores Mariano Escobedo, to help cover funeral costs. The grounds were renamed Santa Maria in 1965, and the Texas Historical Commission placed a marker there in 2003.
