History

This Hyde Park landmark was the Austin home and studio of German-born sculptor Elisabet Ney (1833-1907), the first woman admitted to Munich's Royal Academy of Fine Arts, who emigrated to Texas as a political refugee. She built the studio she named Formosa in 1892-93, the earliest art studio in Texas, and there sculpted Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston. After her death her friends preserved the studio and its contents as the Elisabet Ney Museum, and the City of Austin assumed ownership in 1941.
