History
The TMI Castle was built in 1870 as headquarters for the Texas Military Institute, a young men's preparatory school founded in 1868 in Bastrop and moved to Austin in 1870. Inspired by West Point and the Virginia Military Institute, the Victorian building was designed with four corner towers, though only two were completed and one survives today. The institute owned it until the school closed in 1880, after which it briefly housed Jacob Bickler's Texas German and English Academy (1884-1887). Now a private residence, it lends its name to the Castle Hill neighborhood and was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1962.
