History

Woodlawn, also known as the Pease Mansion, is a Greek Revival house completed in 1853 by Austin's master builder Abner Cook for James B. Shaw, the state comptroller. It is the largest of the four surviving two-story Greek Revival mansions Cook built in the 1850s. Governor Elisha M. Pease bought Woodlawn in 1859 and it remained in his family for years; Governor Allan Shivers later restored it as his home in 1957. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, it is the centerpiece of the Old West Austin Historic District; its marker dates to 1961.
