History

Behind the Barton Springs Baptist Church on Goodrich Avenue lies one of the first African American cemeteries in Central Texas, in use by 1866 — the same year the congregation, one of the county's oldest Black churches, was founded beside it. The ground is reported to hold more than 2,000 graves, though only a handful of markers survive. Both church and cemetery are designated City of Austin historic landmarks, anchoring the memory of the freedmen's community that once lived west of today's Lamar Boulevard.
