History
Steele's Academy at Pennington in Trinity County opened in 1866 as a coeducational school, first known as Pennington College. It was renamed for its founder and principal, Daniel Webster Steele of New Hampshire, and operated as a private Christian school strongly supported by area Baptists until about 1882, drawing students from many counties. The State of Texas placed a marker at the site in 1936.
