History

The Historic Upshur Museum in Gilmer occupies a former U.S. post office at 119 Simpson Street, built in 1925-26 and used until 1991 before local groups converted it into a museum that opened its first exhibits in 1993. Its collections include Caddo and archaic Native American artifacts, samples of local Gilmer and Byrd pottery, and a photographic record of the region's industry and agriculture.
