History

The Briscoe-Garner Museum honors Vice President John Nance 'Cactus Jack' Garner and Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe Jr. It occupies Garner's home, a National Historic Landmark designed by architect Atlee Ayres and built in 1920, which Garner donated to Uvalde in 1952 as a memorial to his wife Ettie. The Garner Museum opened in 1973 and transferred to the University of Texas in 1999, becoming a division of the Briscoe Center for American History; it was renamed in 2011 to also honor Briscoe. The first floor covers Garner's career and the second is devoted to Briscoe.
