History

The Whitehead Memorial Museum in Del Rio, established in 1962 and opened to the public on October 9, 1962, is the only full-time public museum in Val Verde County, spread across roughly two acres with 18 buildings and more than 40 permanent exhibits. Its grounds include a replica of Judge Roy Bean's "Jersey Lilly" saloon and the graves of Bean and his son Sam, moved there in 1964 from a Del Rio cemetery.
