History

Cementerio Loma de la Cruz, 'Hill of the Cross Cemetery,' was established in 1884 when early Del Rio land developer Paula Losoya Taylor Rivers (c. 1830-1902) donated four acres so the town's Mexican community would have a burial ground of its own. A cross set atop the hill gave the cemetery its name. Those interred include three former U.S. Army Indian Scouts and the Rev. Ramon V. Palomares, first pastor of Del Rio's Mexican American Methodist church; the last burial took place in 1933.
