History
The Victoria Colored School at 702 E. Convent Street was built in 1901 to a design by architect Jules Leffland, in the Diamond Hill area settled by freedmen after the Civil War. Serving Victoria's African American community, it was officially renamed F. W. Gross High School in 1936 and remained the city's high school for Black students until integration in 1966. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 9, 1986, and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1986.
