History
The lands of the Murphy Ranch in Victoria County have been used continuously for cattle ranching since 1726, when the site formed part of the Mission Espiritu Santo ranch, among the earliest great cattle operations in Texas. After William Maston Murphy was killed during the Civil War's Red River campaign, his widow Nancy remained on the land and raised their children, and their son built a dog-run house that has stayed in family use. The ranch descended through the family to Jane Murphy Welder, sole owner by 1975, and then to her daughters; the marker was placed in 2009.
