History
This house west of Independence is associated with Dr. Asa Hoxey (1800-1863), a Georgia-born physician and planter who moved to Texas in 1833 and established plantations at Coles Settlement. A supporter of Texas independence, Hoxey served as a Washington County delegate to the 1835 Consultation and is credited with renaming the community Independence. The Asa Hoxey House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 for its architectural significance and its association with Hoxey.
