History

Friedens Church, German for Peace, was founded in 1890 by German immigrants in Washington County, former members of the Evangelical Church of Germany, after Rev. Klindworth began holding services in 1888. Built about a mile and a half south of Washington on land bought in 1888 for one dollar, the church long held German-language services, transitioning fully to English by 1960. The Texas Historical Commission marked the church in 2014, its school in 2015, and its graveyard in 2017.
